A low pH cleanser is a face wash made to sit closer to your skin’s naturally acidic surface than a traditional alkaline soap. Pick by skin type: a light gel for combination skin, a cushiony foam or gel for dry skin, and a short, fragrance-free formula for sensitive skin.

Quick answer: A low pH cleanser is one whose listing states a pH close to skin’s acidic surface, usually around 5.0 to 6.0, rather than an alkaline soap. For combination skin, COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser and Round Lab 1025 Dokdo both list 5.0 to 6.0. For dry skin, Torriden Balanceful Cleansing Gel lists about 5.5, and for sensitive skin, ETUDE SoonJung 5.5 Foam Cleanser lists 5.5 with the shortest ingredient list here.
Quick pick: Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser, 150 ml. Its listing gives a pH of 5.0 to 6.0. Check price and stock at Mirai
How we chose: we read each product’s Mirai listing and its ingredient list on INCIDecoder. We only give a pH number when the listing states one. We did not measure pH or run a wear trial. Prices are Mirai’s at our last check and can change.
What “low pH” means, and why the acid mantle matters
pH runs from 0 to 14, and 7 is neutral. Skin’s surface is acidic. In a study of 330 people, researchers estimated that natural skin surface pH averages about 4.7. Skin with a pH below 5.0 also scored better on barrier function, moisture and scaling than skin above 5.0. The same paper notes that prior use of soap affects skin pH, and that even tap water at around pH 8 can raise it for up to six hours.
Cleansers fall into two broad groups. Soaps are alkaline. Synthetic detergents, called syndets, can be made at a lower pH. A 2022 review of soaps and syndets says soaps tend to cause barrier disruption, lipid loss and pH change, while syndets can better maintain skin’s structure. A dermatology review of cleansers also links syndets to less irritation and dryness than alkaline soaps.
pH isn’t the only thing that matters. The 2022 review puts the type of surfactant at the center of how mild a cleanser is. Still, a lower pH is a sensible starting point.
How to tell if a cleanser is low pH
- Look for a stated number. Some listings give a pH or a range, such as 5.5 or 5.0 to 6.0. Those are the brand’s claims, not lab results from us.
- Read the surfactants. The picks below lead with synthetic surfactants such as sodium cocoyl isethionate, betaines and glucosides. Surfactants alone won’t tell you the pH, so use them alongside a stated number.
- Don’t trust “gentle” alone. One Anua foam is a good example. The Anua Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam listing says it is made at a higher, alkaline pH, like many traditional foaming cleansers. If low pH is your goal, it isn’t the pick, however mild the marketing sounds.

Foam or gel: which texture to choose
Texture and pH are separate choices. A foam can be low pH, as Isntree and ETUDE show, and a “gentle” foam can still be alkaline, as the Anua Quercetinol listing shows. The listings describe Torriden’s gel as having minimal lather and COSRX’s as a moderate, soft lather, while Isntree’s foam has a dense lather. None of the low pH picks here is a soap.

Where a low pH cleanser fits in your routine
A low pH cleanser is usually the second step of a double cleanse, after an oil or balm on days you wear sunscreen or makeup. Our double cleansing guide explains when you need both steps, and our best Korean cleansing oils cover the first step. For a broader roundup of oils, foams and balms, see best Korean cleansers by skin type.
The American Academy of Dermatology suggests washing twice a day and after sweating, using lukewarm water and your fingertips, and patting dry with a soft towel.
After cleansing, a toner such as Anua Heartleaf 77 Hyaluron Soothing Toner is the next step. Our Korean toner rankings compare more options.
Frequently asked questions
What is a low pH cleanser?
A face wash made to be mildly acidic, closer to skin’s natural surface pH (a study of 330 people estimated an average of about 4.7) than traditional alkaline soaps.
Is a low pH cleanser better for your skin?
Research links soap-based, alkaline cleansers with more barrier disruption and pH change than milder synthetic cleansers, so a low pH formula is a sensible default, especially for dry or sensitive skin.
Which Korean cleanser suits combination skin?
A light foam or gel with a stated low pH, such as Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser or COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser, both listed at pH 5.0 to 6.0.
What is a good Korean low pH cleanser for dry skin?
Torriden Balanceful Cleansing Gel or Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Low-pH Cleansing Foam, both listed at about pH 5.5 and both with glycerin high in their ingredient lists.
Is foam cleanser bad for sensitive skin?
Not necessarily: low pH, fragrance-free foams such as ETUDE SoonJung 5.5 and AESTURA Atobarrier 365 are made to be mild, but check the listing, since some foams are alkaline.
How can I tell a cleanser’s pH?
Look for a pH stated on the listing or the brand’s page; the ingredient list alone can’t tell you the number.
